WHAT IS AN ESSENTIAL OIL ROOM SPRAY?
Essential oil room sprays are an inexpensive and more natural way to keep the home smelling fresh. Essential oils are made from cold pressing or distilling certain parts of plants, making them a more natural source of fragrance.
Did you know that essential oils have been around for many years, and have a wide variety of different uses?! I’ve written a post about them called What’s The Deal With Essential Oils if you are interested in learning more.
WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OIL ROOM SPRAYS USED FOR?
Essential oil room sprays are versatile and simple to make. We use them in our bathrooms and by the diaper pail to eliminate odors. And yes, this essential oil room spray takes the place of poo-pourri and effectively removes unwanted smells in the bathrooms. For linens, we have a sleepy blend that I will spritz onto our bedding after taking it out of the laundry.
During the holidays, I used a DIY essential room spray with an oil called Northern Lights Black Spruce to make our home smell like a fresh Christmas tree!
We like to have several different room sprays on hand at all times. We spray the dog’s bedding, our throw pillows, our kid’s shoes and our cars! Actually, we use essential oil sprays for anything that needs a pick me up.
WHY SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES AREN’T THE BEST
Have you ever gotten a headache from a smell? Headaches from artificial fragrances are actually much more common than you may think, synthetic (artificial) fragrances are everywhere, and they are unfortunately loaded with chemicals and other potentially harmful ingredients.
These “fake smells” are in nearly everything, from plug-ins to aerosols, candles and more. Synthetic fragrances can even disrupt our endocrine systems, give headaches, skin irritation and more.
Most artificial fragrances give me an instant headache and after doing research on the topic, I totally understand why now! The switch was simple, essential oils.
A while back, our family started transitioning to a more non-toxic lifestyle. This meant researching and understanding the ingredients coming into our home, and trying to make as many items by hand as possible. To read more about our non-toxic journey, click HERE.
DIY essential room spray is just one of the many items I like to make from scratch here at the farmhouse. I also love making DIY skincare/body products and share many recipes HERE.
TOOLS AND INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO MAKE AN ESSENTIAL OIL ROOM SPRAY

- Essential Oils
- Witch Hazel
- Distilled Water
- Glass Spray Bottle: this is the kit that I purchased (and love) for all of my essential oil DIYs. If you are just looking for spray bottles for a room spray, you may consider these.
HOW TO MAKE AN ESSENTIAL OIL ROOM SPRAY
First, add about 20 drops of essential oils to your glass bottle. The number of drops will vary a little bit, depending on your recipe or strength of the spray that you are making.
Don’t hesitate to combine different essential oils together and experiment. Some oils mix very well together to create pleasant aromas!
After the oils are added, fill the glass bottle to the half way mark with witch hazel. Using witch hazel helps the essential oils to smell for a longer period of time, and helps to mix the oils with the water in the glass bottle.
Fill the glass bottle to the top with distilled water to finish the project.
To ensure the mixture is well incorporated, shake well before each use and then spray onto the desired surface.
