WHAT IS BODY BUTTER?
Body butter is a combination of a butter (such as shea butter or mango butter, etc.) and oil. Whipped together, this perfect combination of ingredients creates what we call “body butter”. Due to the nourishing oils in body butter, it can sometimes leave a little bit of an oily residue on the skin. If desired, arrowroot powder can be added to absorb any excess oil in this recipe.
Commonly found with homemade skincare products, the consistency of body butter may vary slightly depending on the temperature of where it is stored.
Homemade body butter can be used just as regular lotion is used, and it’s great for all skin types. One of my favorite homemade body butter uses is for the feet! Before bed, apply body butter to the feet and then put socks on. In the morning, your feet will be softer and you’ll (almost) think you just had a pedicure.
While this can be used all over the body, it works especially well on very dry skin. So, if you’ve just finished working in the garden like me, you’ll be keeping this on hand to rehydrate your skin.
WHY I LOVE HOMEMADE WHIPPED BODY BUTTER
I love all homemade skincare products, and body butter is no different. Knowing the ingredients in the products that are applied to your body (and being able to pronounce them) is so important.
When making your own skincare products, a lot of the same ingredients are often used in different quantities and combinations. It’s worthwhile to purchase moderately sized ingredients, as the shelf life is long and the items will get put to good. An added benefit to purchasing in bulk is a lower cost, and don’t forget it’s more eco-friendly too.
For storage of body butter and other homemade skincare recipes, I find these shorter jars to be very convenient. The wide mouth makes it easy to access your product, while the height is perfect for grabbing what you need without having to risk getting your hand stuck in a jar! A few years ago, my husband grabbed a few old glass jars with metal lids from a barn yard sale. These cute old jars are pictured here today, and they were perfect for making a couple of “travel sized” body butter containers.
In the homemade body butter recipe pictured today, I chose to use Orange essential oils to create a fresh scent. This batch of body butter smells like an orange creamsicle, so refreshing yet so sweet.
TOOLS NEEDED

- Coconut Oil – beneficial to the skin for it’s excellent ability to moisturize even the driest skin and provides anti-inflammatory properties.
- Shea Butter – known for softening and healing skin (as well as containing anti-inflammatory properties).
- Sweet Almond Oil – excellent for improving complexion and skin tone. I no longer use makeup remover, and instead use sweet almond oil on a warm washcloth. The result is clean skin, as the almond oil removes any makeup residue without the need to rub the skin. Also, using a method such as this is much more eco-friendly than single-use makeup removing wipes.
- Essential Oils
- Arrowroot Powder – often used in diy skincare (such as homemade deodorants)
- Mixer
- Large Bowl
- Jars
INGREDIENTS
Coconut Oil (1/2 C)
Shea Butter (1/2 C)
Sweet Almond Oil (1/2 C)
~20 drops of essential oils (I used orange essential oils for this recipe)
1-3 tbsp Arrowroot Powder (optional)
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE WHIPPED BODY BUTTER
Set up a double boiler by bringing a medium sized sauce pan filled with water to a boil on your stove top. Next, set a large bowl over the top of the sauce pan so that the bottom of the bowl is in the boiling water.
Add coconut oil, shea butter and sweet almond oil to the double boiler. Carefully stir until the mixture has melted into liquid, about 10-15 minutes.
Remove the melted mixture from the double boiler and let it sit until cool enough to refrigerate.
Put the mixture into the refrigerator (or freezer) until it’s solid enough for your finger to make a clear imprint and retain it’s shape. There have been many times where I forgot about my body butter in the fridge or freezer, and just left it on top of my wood stove or in my home to warm up enough.
Put the body butter into a stand mixer and add essential oils and arrowroot powder. Turn the mixer on low, you’ll want to let this mix for several minutes or until the consistency of hard peaks much like whipping egg whites.
Fill up your jars and enjoy!
Much like many homemade skincare recipes, if your home is warm the consistency of the body butter may be slightly more liquid.
Please note, adding arrowroot powder is optional and will reduce greasiness.
