Pink Himalayan salt is beautiful. We can cook with it or use it in skincare recipes, either way it will not disappoint!
WHAT IS PINK HIMALAYAN SALT?
We’ve all seen those beautiful pink Himalayan salt lamps at the store, but what’s the deal with pink salt anyway?
“Himalayan salt is rock salt mined from the Punjab region of Pakistan. The salt often has a pinkish tint due to mineral impurities. It is primarily used as a food additive as table salt, but is also used as a material for cooking and food presentation, decorative lamps, and spa treatments.” – Wikipedia
BENEFITS OF USING HIMALAYAN SALT SCRUB
Himalayan salt makes a great exfoliator when mixed with coconut oil and applied to the skin. Although similar, salt scrubs are different than sugar scrubs.
Sugar scrubs provide gentle exfoliation, and are easily tolerated by most skin types without irritation.
Salt scrubs are more abrasive, therefore provide more intense exfoliation. Salt scrub is perfect to be used all over (if you’re like me and you prefer a more intense exfoliation) or use it on tougher areas of skin such as the elbows or feet.
Plus, bathing or exfoliating with pink Himalayan salt has detoxifying benefits due to the minerals in the salt. Himalayan salt contains a large number of minerals, which can be absorbed by the skin.
HOW TO USE A SALT SCRUB
Using a salt body scrub is essentially the same process as when we use a sugar scrub. The warm water from your shower or bath will begin to soften skin, so after a few moments apply salt scrub and gently massage it into skin. Next, you’ll want to rinse well and then continue on with the rest of your routine.
A word of caution, remember that this is a scrub containing salt – so if you have a scratch or cut avoid putting salt onto the area(s)!

- Pink Himalayan Salt: I highly recommend purchasing “fine grain” Himalayan salt like this one linked. When I made this recipe, I used a Himalayan salt that was in a grinder and had to grind for quite a while to make enough salt for the scrub!
- Coconut Oil: Such a nourishing ingredient for the skin, coconut oil makes the perfect moisturizer to pair with Himalayan salt in this recipe.
- Glass Jar: for storage (and these shorter jars are much easier to scoop DIY scrubs/lotions out of)
- Essential Oils: You’ll want to add a few drops of essential oils to your pink himalayan body scrub, but what to add? Consider the purpose of your body scrub to help you decide what essential oil(s) to use.
- For a relaxing spa night: Lavender
- For healthy skin support: Geranium, Frankincense, or citrus oils.
HOW TO MAKE SALT SCRUB
Place about 3/4 C of pink Himalayan salt into a medium-sized mixing bowl. Then scoop out 1/4 C Coconut Oil and add to the salt and mix until combined, this will take several minutes.
For a pro-tip, use your hands to mix the oil and salt together. The heat from your hands will slightly melt the coconut oil enough incorporate the two ingredients together.
Finally, mix in about 10 drops of the essential oils of your choosing. For the recipe pictured here, I used Lavender essential oils to promote calm and relaxation.
Place the Himalayan salt scrub into a glass jar, then you’re ready to gift or enjoy!

STORAGE
Himalayan salt body scrub should be stored in a glass container with a lid. Be sure to close the lid securely between uses, and this homemade body product will last for several months.
I typically store jars of body scrub in my bathroom cabinet, and rotate the scrubs through the shower area as I’m using them. Otherwise, I would need a bigger shower to store all the different DIY scrubs that I love so much!
Body scrubs of any kind make for excellent gifts to give to loved ones.
