Before we begin, this is not a sticky/gooey lip balm recipe, our homemade mango butter lip balm is light and silky smooth! Side note, if you have a latex allergy (or other allergies) please do some research before using mango butter.
WHAT IS MANGO BUTTER?
Mangos are a beautiful fruit, but that pesky seed always takes up most of the inside. Do you ever wonder what can be done with those huge mango seeds?
Well, believe it or not – that’s where mango butter comes from! Mango butter is made from cold-pressing or expelling mango fruit seeds.
Many DIY skincare recipes call for shea butter. While I love the benefits of shea butter for skincare, it does have a distinct scent that often takes quite a bit of essential oils to mask. Here’s where mango butter comes to the rescue! Mango butter doesn’t really smell like much of anything, so it’s becoming a favorite ingredient in our home very quickly.
WHAT DOES MANGO BUTTER DO FOR OUR SKIN?
Much like shea butter, mango butter is easily absorbed by our skin without leaving behind a greasy residue. The consistency of mango butter appears to be much like an oversized stick of butter, but is surprisingly light and silky.
Mango butter does not clog pores, therefore being a great product to apply to the face or any other area prone to breakouts.
Rich in fatty acids, vitamins A & C (and so much more) mango butter is amazing for our skin. It can be used to help reduce fine lines, treat dry skin, burns (sunburn or frost bite), eczema and much more.
As for our lips, mango butter is easily absorbed leaving a light, silky smooth coating that is not thick or sticky. For reference, my hair doesn’t stick to my lips when wearing this (and that’s a big deal in my book). My husband tried this out too and he was pleasantly surprised.
With anti-inflammatory properties, mango butter can help to soothe angry skin irritation (goodbye, chapped lips). Please use caution, and don’t apply to an open wound without first speaking with a physician.
OTHER INGREDIENTS IN HOMEMADE LIP BALM
While we love mango butter, there are some other ingredients in homemade lip balm that help to make this recipe amazing.
Jojoba Oil: We know that jojoba oil has many incredible benefits to the skin, plus it is silky and very easily absorbed. This magic ingredient helps to lock in moisture by creating a barrier between your lips and the outside world. Say goodbye to windburned, sunburned and chapped lips!
Coconut Oil: Oh do we love coconut oil. With antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, coconut oil is also a top skincare ingredient in our home. This fatty oil soaks into skin well, and is always easily available for purchase. We make plenty of SUGAR SCRUB and SALT SCRUB recipes with it.
Beeswax: Both moisturizing and protecting, beeswax gets the job done in this homemade lip balm recipe. Because of it’s solid nature, beeswax also helps to hold this recipe together. Beeswax is also used to make HOMEMADE LOTION BARS, and it is how we get these beautiful bars to keep their shape.
WHY WE LOVE HOMEMADE LIP BALM
Traditional lip balms typically contain a fair share of chemicals. Some commonly found chemicals in store-bought lip balms are parabens, artificial fragrances, alcohol and more. Lip balms are essentially eaten, as we do ingest some of the products that we put on our lips, so it’s important to know your ingredients (or make lip balm yourself).
If you’ve dipped your toes into the world of DIY skincare, you will find that making lip balm is much like making other DIY skincare recipes. Very simple!
Mango butter lip balm can be stored in any type of container you have on hand, such as little jars or recycled chap stick containers.
Homemade lip balm also makes for a great gift idea!
TOOLS AND INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO MAKE MANGO BUTTER LIP BALM AT HOME

- Medium sized sauce pan (to make a double boiler)
- Glass bowl
- Spatula
- Measuring Cups
- Container to put lip balm in
- Essential Oils
- Jojoba Oil (1 tsp)
- Coconut Oil (2 tsp)
- Mango Butter (2 tsp)
- Beeswax (2 tsp)
THE PROCESS OF MAKING MANGO BUTTER LIP BALM
Please note, if you are interested in making homemade lip balm and do not have mango butter just substitute shea butter in the same quantity. The rest of the process is the same.
Make a double boiler by placing the saucepan of water onto the stove and putting a heat-safe bowl over top of it. Bring the water to a boil.
Drop all of the ingredients into the bowl and mix occasionally. Beeswax typically takes the longest to melt, so expect this to be cooking for about 15 to 20 minutes.
Once the mixture is completely melted, it should be amber in color. Add your favorite essential oils. For the recipe pictured here, I added about 10 drops of grapefruit EO.
For glass lip balm containers, go ahead and carefully pour the hot liquid directly into the containers. If you will be storing your lip balm in plastic containers, allow it to cool for 2-3 minutes before pouring it into the desired containers.
Once the containers are filled, allow the lip balm to solidify for about an hour in the fridge before diving in!
STORAGE OF HOMEMADE LIP BALM
Much like other homemade skincare recipes, if the ingredients used to make the product are stable at room temperature then the end product will be stable at room temperature.
I recommend storing your lip balm someplace cool, as it can get a little bit more liquid when very warm.
PAMPER YOUR LIPS!
It’s currently winter here at Simply Rooted Farmhouse and between the cold air outside and the wood stove inside our lips take a beating. Well, there’s no need to suffer with painful, cracked or dry lips.
To fix those lips fast, try whipping up a quick lip scrub. In THIS POST I share two of my favorite DIY lip scrub recipes. For chapped, painful lips I recommend trying the honey lip scrub. Both of these recipes can be made with ingredients right in your pantry, and these scrubs can be stored for a few weeks.
After lips are scrubbed, apply this homemade mango butter lip balm over top to lock in moisture and protect your lips from the elements.
