WHAT ARE MAGIC BARS?

magic bars

Magic bars are a simple dessert, featuring a savory graham cracker crust with layers of nuts, chocolate and flaked coconut over top. The best part? We drizzle condensed milk over the top of these decadent layers.

Since I was a little girl, I have loved this dessert. The gooey sweet layers over top a graham cracker crumble gets me every time. The tradition continues as I now make these for our boys, and our boys love them just as much as I do.

WHY MAKE MAGIC BARS?

family favorite dessert

My favorite reason to love magic bars is that the ingredients are very forgiving. It’s sort of a use-what-you-have type of recipe, and it’s pretty much guaranteed to taste amazing.

In the recipe pictured here, I had about 1/4 of a cup of peanut butter chips in my refrigerator that were taking up space – so I threw them into the mix along with the regular chocolate chips. We used chopped walnuts, but really any type of chopped nut will do.

I love having simple recipes like this one in my tool kit (aka pinned onto my favorite Pinterest boards) for when a quick recipe is needed in a pinch. Desserts are no different, and I especially love this recipe because of the simple ingredients used to make it.

As a mom of two toddler boys, I’ll admit that there are some recipes that are just too much to make with little helpers. I like simple, and I also like low mess. The kids helped me to sprinkle the toppings onto the magic bars and helped to tell me which toppings to add next. Having a quick cook time of only 30 minutes was another bonus, as it gave us just enough time to do a quick craft before our magic bars were done and ready to taste.

Clean up is a breeze when it comes to magic bars, because there’s no mixing or bowls full of batter. Store your magic bars in the container you cooked them in, or transfer to a pan (but you only have to wash one dish)!
